October saw a successful Get Online Week in Oxfordshire with more than 45 events on around the county helping people to make the most of the internet! In this blog, we’re bringing together a few of the great examples from the libraries, community groups and charities across the county.

Getting the most from the NHS App

Abingdon and Banbury Libraries were two of many doing drop-in sessions to help people use the increasingly feature-filled NHS App (both as an app on your phone and a website). Read more from this update from the county council’s digital infrastructure team (and did you know Abingdon Library is one of a number of GigaHubs in the county, with top-notch gigabit internet connectivity?)

Astons Online teamed up with Didcot Library for an NHS App and general support drop-in, seeing up to six people at each session.

Marta from NHS Digital and the team at Visionary Pictures have also put together this lovely Switch to Digital film promoting the NHS Digital Services and the work the they are doing on digital inclusion.

Do you know what PSTN stands for?

The digital infrastructure team were joined by Chris Hockley, the Engagement Manager for Digital Voice at EE, for a drop-in session at the Oxford Westgate Library helping people understand their options as the old fashioned analogue phone systems are switched off. If you missed them, you can find out all about the PSTN withdrawal (and check how you did on the acronym) here.

Tech Rescuing at SHARE Oxford

Brian and Ben at SHARE Oxford helped or advised seven guests with all sorts of IT issues including uncommunicative printers, sluggish tablets, rationalising software subscriptions, keyboards not clicking and more. They talk through how they helped and what they learned as a community group on their blog here. And a favourite quote from Barbara “we were really grateful to not be made to feel stupid!”

As well as helping people, they were grateful for four donated devices which have been passed to the refurbishment hubs here at GOO and in his downtime, Brian powered through final checks on 25 laptops destined for the scrap heap, making doubly-sure we had cleared all personal data.

Keen to get involved?

Our partners are always interested to hear from volunteers interested to help with this “community IT support”.

We’re also grateful for the growing numbers of businesses and community groups helping us with donation drives or setting up as collection points for devices to pass on to people in need.

If you’d like to get involved or be introduced to a local team, please give Ben a shout at hello@gettingoxfordshireonline.org!

And of course, if you would like to donate a device, our donation points would love for you to pay a visit…
